How we clear blocked drains in Hastings

Most blocked drains in Hastings are the household kind — blocked toilet, slow kitchen sink, stormwater that won't clear after heavy rain. Jacob (APlus's director, still on the tools) and the team clear these with a drain-clearing water blaster and CCTV camera — two of us are certified drainlayers. If the clear reveals something bigger (collapsed pipe, failed drainage line), we're already set up to sort that too. Here's what a typical callout looks like:

  1. You call — 06 870 6000, or email jacob@aplusplumbingandgas.co.nz if it's not urgent. Rio or Jacob picks up.

  2. We give you a time — usually same business day for a standard blocked drain. You'll know upfront if it's going to be tomorrow rather than today.

  3. We diagnose first — eyeballing and standard rodding handles most household blockages. For blockages further down the line or recurring ones, we run the CCTV camera to see what's going on before we start clearing.

  4. Then we clear it — drain-clearing water blaster for the stubborn stuff (tree roots, grease, compacted debris) that rods can't shift. If a simple snake does the job, we use that. No overkill.

  5. We tell you what caused it — and whether it's likely to come back.

  6. Extra work gets quoted before we start it — only if there is anything extra. If the clear is all it needs, that's all you pay for.

What it costs: $90 an hour, one-hour minimum call-out. The drain-clearing water blaster runs at a $150 per-job additional charge when it's needed. Anything bigger (collapsed line, pipe repair) gets quoted before we start — no surprises on the invoice.

Urgent blocked drains in Hastings

When it's urgent: sewage backing up inside the house, water pooling where it shouldn't, an overflowing outdoor gully during heavy rain, or a complete blockage that's stopped water draining anywhere. These don't wait — the longer they run, the more damage they do.

Call first. We do urgent same-day callouts for blocked drains across Hastings during business hours, and after-hours callouts on a per-job basis — call first so we can work out whether it's something we can walk you through until morning, or something that needs us on-site tonight.

While you wait, a few things that actually help:

  • If sewage is backing up inside, stop using water in the house — every flush, tap, and washing cycle makes it worse.

  • If a toilet is overflowing, turn off the small isolation valve on the pipe behind the pan (if you can see one). If not, don't keep flushing.

  • If an outdoor gully is overflowing during rain, it's usually the stormwater system rather than a blockage — don't pour drain cleaner down it. It won't help, and if we need to diagnose the line, we can't do that with chemicals in the way.

Call 06 870 6000. Our emergency plumber line for Hastings and Napier covers urgent plumbing beyond drains — burst pipes, no hot water, gas issues.

Signs your drain is blocked

The specific symptom often tells us where the blockage is before we get there:

  • Water draining slowly or not at all — localised (hair in a shower trap, grease in a sink) or a sign of something further down the line.

  • Toilet backing up or not flushing — the blockage is usually past the pan, in the line between your toilet and the main sewer.

  • Gurgling from pipes — air is struggling past a partial blockage or a vent-pipe issue. This one's often the early warning before a full block.

  • Bad smells from drains — organic matter caught in the line, or sometimes just a dried-out P-trap if that drain hasn't been used in a while (not always a blockage).

  • Outdoor gully or stormwater drain overflowing — usually a mainline problem or a collapsed pipe under the yard.

  • More than one drain slow at the same time — almost always a mainline issue. Stop running water through the house and call us.

What's causing your blocked drain

The cause matters because it changes whether clearing will hold. Some blockages won't come back once cleared. Others will, unless something bigger is sorted.

Common household causes: grease and food waste in kitchen lines, hair and soap in bathroom drains, wet wipes flushed down toilets ("flushable" or not). These are the clears that usually hold.

The ones that keep coming back: tree roots growing into pipe joints (the joint itself needs repair) and collapsed pipe sections underground (the line has failed and needs work beyond clearing).

Blocked drains we see a lot in Hastings:

Older Hawke's Bay housing stock — and that's a big chunk of Hastings — often has clay and earthenware drainage pipes that need careful handling. They crack under too much pressure. Joints shift with age and let tree roots in. We adjust how we work based on what the CCTV shows us before we start clearing.

Stormwater is the other Hastings-specific one. Around 80–90% of older homes in the region weren't built with proper stormwater drainage — a compliance issue for landlords under the NZ Healthy Homes standards. When an outdoor gully overflows after heavy rain, it's often not "blocked" in the ordinary sense; the system was never built to handle the water in the first place. We'll tell you if that's what's going on rather than clearing the same drain every time it rains.

If it's more than just a blockage

Sometimes clearing reveals the real problem is the pipe itself — a collapsed section, cracked earthenware, or stormwater that was never built right. In those cases we're already set up to fix it properly. Jacob is a certified drainlayer — two of the team are — and we have digger access when the job calls for it. No hunting around for a second contractor. More about our drainlaying services

Who we work with in Hastings

We clear blocked drains for four main groups in Hastings and Hawke's Bay.

Homeowners with household blockages. Most of our drain work. You want it sorted quickly, done properly, and priced fairly. We arrive when we said we would, diagnose the cause, clear it, and tell you what caused it — at $90/hr with the price quoted upfront. Rio handles the booking; Jacob or the team does the job. We clean up after ourselves — customers text Rio specifically to say so.

Landlords and property managers. We work directly with Harcourts and Oxygen on Hawke's Bay rentals. For blocked drains and drainage issues, we handle the whole loop — diagnose, quote, tenant follow-through — without pulling you in to chase things. If a drainage problem is actually a Healthy Homes stormwater gap, we'll tell you what it'll take to bring the property into line.

Owners of older Hawke's Bay homes. If your house has clay or earthenware drainage — very common in Hastings — a blocked drain is often a symptom of the pipe condition, not just something stuck in the line. We run CCTV to see what's actually going on and tell you the real situation, not just the short-term fix. If the pipes are near end-of-life, we say so. If they've got years left, we say that too.

Commercial operators and facility managers. We handle commercial drainage too — grease traps for cafés, restaurants, and food-service sites, pump stations, and the larger lines that come with higher-volume use. Same $90/hr rate, same honest quote upfront. For installation or pipe-replacement work beyond the clear, see our drainlaying work.

Blocked drains FAQs

How much does a blocked drain callout cost?

$90 an hour, one-hour minimum. The drain-clearing water blaster is a $150 per-job add-on when it's needed. A simple rod-and-snake clear is usually done within that first hour. Anything bigger (pipe repair, collapsed line) gets a separate quote before we start — no surprise invoices.

Should I call a plumber or a dedicated drain specialist?

For a standard household blockage, either works — both use similar equipment (water blaster, CCTV). The real difference is what happens if clearing reveals the pipe itself is the problem. A drain specialist usually has to refer you to a plumber or drainlayer to sort that; we can handle it in-house.

Will you just clear the blockage or fix what's causing it?

We clear it and tell you what caused it. If it's wear-and-tear (grease, hair, minor debris), the clear usually holds. If it's something bigger (collapsed line, tree roots at a joint, failed pipe), the blockage will come back unless the cause is dealt with — we'll explain what that means and quote the fix separately. Your call whether to go further.

Do you work on blocked drains in older homes?

Yes — we see clay and earthenware drainage pipes regularly across Hastings and Hawke's Bay. With older pipes we're careful about how much pressure the water blaster uses; too much can crack a brittle line. The CCTV camera helps us see what we're working with before we start clearing.

How quickly can you get to me?

Usually same business day for Hastings-area callouts, sometimes within a couple of hours if we've got a van free. We'll tell you upfront if it's going to be tomorrow instead. For after-hours urgency, call first — we'll work out whether it's a walk-you-through-on-the-phone situation or a same-night visit.

What if my blocked drain keeps coming back?

Recurring blockages usually mean the clear isn't addressing the underlying cause. Common reasons: tree roots invading the same pipe joint, a compromised pipe section, or a stormwater system that was never built to handle the load. We run CCTV to see what's actually happening and tell you what it'll take to stop the cycle — sometimes it's a single joint repair, sometimes it's a bigger drainage rebuild.
